I will go out of my way to help those who are serious and want to know more about how to build their own outdoor advertising billboard business.
FAMILY VALUES
For those of you who don't know who " Will Rogers " is, he was a well know American cowboy entertainer, vaudeville performer, American humorist, social commentator and motion picture actor in the early 1900's. We both shared a love for the motion picture industry and the same great grandparents from the Oklahoma Territory who were Native American, Cherokee Indians.
One of my favorite writers is an American poet named Robert Frost. One of his poems describes the path I took in life better than any other, it is a poem named " The Road Not Taken."
Two other books that influenced my formative business years were " The Power of Positive Thinking, " by Norman Vincent Peal. The other was " Think and Grow Rich" written by Napoleon Hill and inspired by Andrew Carnegie.
I had the privilege of meeting Carnegie's daughter and granddaughter at their Cumberland Island home in Georgia many years ago. Andrew was the son of poor immigrants who came from Scotland to find the American dream. Andrew started his career as a telegraph delivery boy making $1.20 a week. That job as small as it was, it was his first step to becoming one of the richest men in America. By the early 1900's he had built one of the largest steel empires in America history, US Steel.
While building my place in the outdoor advertising industry over the last half-century, I have had the privilege of meeting and working with some of the finest people on the planet. Many of my customer's client's who listened to the collective knowledge and experience I shared with them went on to find their place on " The Road Not Taken" and become successful entrepreneurs.
During all these years while building my future, I was doing so many things other than outdoor advertising while they allowed the freedom I needed to enjoy life. They were working for me in the deep background 24-7, and 365 days a year they give me the freedom and the funds I needed to live out my dreams, my family's dreams, education, new cars, vacations, etc.
The great thing about owning billboards is they require little or no maintenance, they never come into work late, they never call in sick, complain about being left out in the rain, sleet or snow even if it is 15 below. Instead of paying them to work for you, you provide them with a space to stay. They return the favor by bringing in cash flow income streams. How many salesmen or women would you have to pay to reach out to 50,000 or 180,000 people a day? Be assured it would be thousands of dollars per day. One billboard can reach 10's of thousands of people at a fraction of the cost. Billboards are a great deal for both owner and advertiser. They reach more viewers per advertising dollar than any other media in the world, billboards are a win, win for everyone.

Meet the Company - Just Kidding! This was a pool party I gave for my family and friends. The guys on the left and right are " The Blues Brothers " from Universal Studios, we had just put on a Blues Brother Show for My guest. I am the guy in the middle my name is Thomas Gunter better known to the outdoor advertising community as " Tom " president and CEO of Billboard Brokers of America, LLC, and Gunter Outdoor Advertising, Los Angeles Productions.
It all started for me in 1960 with a part-time job working as an apprentice for a local billboard company, at the time they were the largest billboard company in the state of Florida. Their largest account was Florida's Silver Springs in the early '60s the Florida attractions were the largest buyers of outdoor advertising in the state of Florida. There were not many outdoor billboards around Florida in the '60s.
By At the end of the 3rd year, I was in charge of all the production crews and still making the same money that I was two years earlier. In June 1963 with less than $100.00 in my pocket I said goodbye to my employer and open the doors to my first outdoor advertising company. The first year was tough, a few months after I left one of the old employees of the company, I formerly worked for stopping by to chat. He said he was talking to the owner after I left and asked him " What do you think about Gunter opening an outdoor billboard business? " He replied " How much can one man do? "
Never underestimate the power of " One" my friend that statement gave me the fuel I needed to succeed! I now had a point to prove. By the end of my second year the major advertisers in the area including 3 of Florida's major attractions including Florida's Silver Springs, had moved their accounts over to my new company, not bad for a 22-year old guy up against the financial giants in my area. Soon the employees from my former employer's company were jumping ship and applying for jobs with my new company. I hired the guy that originally trained me, followed by the previous owner and founder of the company I had worked for.
Why you may ask did this happen so quickly? Honesty, integrity, quality products, and customer service. Finally, a place where the customer came first. These are all a part of the formula for success it worked then, and it still works today a half a century later.
By the end of the third year I had built and sold my first seven-figure outdoor advertising company. It took me two years to build the second one and sell it for even more. So " How much can one man do?" Like I said never said underestimate the power of " One" believe in yourself and the world will believe in you. If I could make it happen by the time, I was 22, you can make it happen for you, age has very little to do with it.
We are the product of our own choices and decisions, believe in yourself, you will be amazed at what you can achieve in your lifetime.
Over the past 50 plus years, I have had the privilege of working with many of the pioneers and entrepreneurs that shaped the outdoor advertising industry into what it is today. Over the years I continued to develop, buy, build, and sell outdoor advertising billboards and billboard companies for myself and others. After opening the doors to my first business in 1963 it was hard in the beginning, I had a learning curve to finish conquering, it became part of the learning curve I share with my client's today. It was not all hard work along the way, once the revenue streams from my billboards started flowing in, they afforded me to live out a lifestyle I had only dreamed. One of the best decisions I ever made was to the day I walked away from my job with the other billboard company and went to work for me. I set myself free I can do the same for you. I ventured into local, state, and national politics along the way, working with three different Florida Governors, a United States Congressman and finally the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan.
In the spring of 1998, a Hollywood producer by the name of Richard Zanuck tracked me down through our mutual friend in Washington DC. At the time Mr. Zanuck's company was producing a new film for Warner Brothers named " Driving Miss Daisy " it was a time-period film spanning from the 1940s into the '60s. Mr. Zanuck needed someone to hand paint and produce time-period billboards for his film. I accepted the commission along with my first film credits.
The following year Driving Miss Daisy won three Academy Awards and " Best Picture of The Year " little did I know what the effect of having my name on the credit roll of " The Best Picture of The Year" would have on my business and personal life. Those credits open a new doorway into the movie industry. One door leads to another, as way leads to way, Quickly I was adopted into a circle of movie producers and creative filmmakers many whom I am still friends with today. Today Driving Miss Daisy is an all-time classic that will be around for generations to come.

- Today my business interest and associates span the globe to every continent. We have a major interest in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas, Texas. I reside in Ocala, Florida with my beautiful wife, Angela. Back home in Florida I was drafted into The Florida Motion Picture and Television Guild where I would later serve out three terms as its president. When President Reagan left office in Washington, my interest turned back to Hollywood. By then I had started working on independent films while attending the American Film Institute in North Hollywood. I enjoyed the creative part of film production so much I started my film and video company while developing a closer bond with the movie and television industry which continues until this day.
